Soar Technology, Inc. (SoarTech) has been awarded a contract to support a United States Special Operations Command (SOCOM) project that focuses on providing user-friendly and real-time battlefield information to Special Operations Forces (SOF) operators. SoarTech’s team includes Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University (Virginia Tech), and will focus on operators’-interface with situational awareness technologies. Specifically, SoarTech will be designing and developing a user interface that focuses on two key features: presentation of situational awareness and intuitive, multi-modal control interface that allows the operator and his teammates to interact more intuitively.

These features will dramatically improve the operator’s survivability and effectiveness by enabling real-time management and orientation of all information through a visual display, and by automatically sharing and synchronizing the situational awareness of each team member via a tactical data network. The multi-modal interface (controlled via speech, gesture, etc.), will enhance the way the operator interacts with both the display and other communication elements.

“We’re excited to be partnering with SOCOM,” said Dr. Michael van Lent, SoarTech President and CEO. “This project will provide better protection and increased capability for SOF in a variety of tactical operations scenarios , and our situational awareness and multi-modal interface technologies will add to the advanced capabilities being brought together to achieve these goals. SoarTech is joining a very strong family of teams involved in this project, and we look forward to developing the user interface, a key component to overall SOF mission sets.”
